Daegu has identified five of its future-facing industries as key areas for growth and economic vitalization of the city. The five industries are Urban Air Mobility, Semiconductor Sensors, Service Robots, Digital Healthcare, and the combined category of Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Blockchain (ABB). In order to spur the development of these key industries, EXCO is working to promote their rapid progress and is actively reaching out to pertinent parties to host conventions in sync with the 5 focused industires. Below is more on the establishment of these five industries in Daegu and a glimpse at the city’s plans for their expansion in the coming years.
Daegu is preparing for the rapidly approaching future of mobility industries such as Urban Air Mobility and self-driving cars. The city is budgeting 300 billion KRW to build a 330,000㎡dedicated Mobility Motor Cluster within the Daegu National Industrial Complex, and also plans to construct an Urban Air Mobility Vertiport (vertical take-off and landing site) by its airport.
Daegu is honing in on semiconductor sensors as its target within the non-memory semiconductor industry, and has plans to establish 'D-Fab' (production process for semiconductors). After securing sensor-related manufacturing companies, startups, semiconductor design companies (Fabless), and increased demand, the city plans to build a dedicated complex for semiconductor sensors near its DGIST area
Home to one of the world’s top five robotics companies and supported by the city’s wealth of mechanical and metal industrial resources, Daegu is planning to grow into a hub city for global service robotics. For well over a decade, Daegu has been pioneering the way forward for the future of Korea’s service robot industry, and already has a well-developed foundation for related industries. In June 2010, a national research institute specializing in robots was established in Daegu, the Korean Robot Industry Promotion Agency. In addition, a robot industry cluster was created in June 2017 and the Global Robot Cluster (GRC) was created in 2018
Daegu Suseong Alpha City, established in 2019, is a thriving software complex home to 11 support institutions in the software field, 114 ABB-related companies, and over 3,000 industry professionals. Daegu aims to grow this area into one of the largest digital innovation hubs in Korea by incorporating ABB technology into the IT industry and establishing Suseong Alpha City as an Information & Communication Technology (ICT) industrial cluster by 2030.
As Korea rapidly shifts into a super-aged society, Daegu is staying ahead of the curve by upgrading its existing manufacturing- oriented medical industry with cutting-edge solutions in digital healthcare. With an emphasis on artificial intelligence, digital treatment devices, and electronic drugs, Daegu plans to further the industry by leveraging the well-equipped infrastructure of its state-of-the-art medical complex. Daegu is already well- known in Korea as a medical industry powerhouse, as it is home to industrial foundations such as the Brain Research Institute, the Advanced Clinical Support Center, the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology's Big Data Center, and the 3D Print Medical Device Manufacturing Center. The city now also aims to foster medical startups specialized in the development of digital treatments and AI drugs.
Accounting for 56% of the country’s trade balance, the textile industry in Daegu is one of the city’s leading industries. Combining technology, culture and information, the industry is developing into a cutting edge knowledge-based industry and pushing the limits of conventional manufacturing and production of textiles. In addition to existing demands from the shipbuilding, car, and electronics industries, the city looks forward to even further development of the industry following new demands for textiles in use for solar cells, robotics, wind power, and other sectors.
The parts, components and materials industries take up 65% of the entire manufacturing sector of the local economy. Also, there are human resource development institutions specializing in the materials industry. The materials industry is being promoted as an intensive future technology industry by the city. The local government is focusing on developing the industry structure and improving infrastructure for sustainable growth to become the components and materials manufacturing hub of the world
Cultural tourism locations, such as the famous Daegu Modern Cultural Street and the Kim Kwang-seok Street, can be found all throughout city. By hosting global festivals and international performance events such as the Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), the Daegu International Opera Festival (DIOF), the International Body Painting Festival and the Daegu CHIMAC Festival (Chicken and Beer), the city has promoted its brand as a cultural city. The city has carried out the project of developing traditional markets as tourist attractions. The Seomun Night Market Project helped the city become established as a tourist attraction worth staying a night for sightseeing. By developing and promoting tourism resources, it took a giant step towards being a global cultural city.
